The International Office at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU)recently held its first induction buddy programme called Sisonke.
When translated, the word sisonke means we are together.
The Sisonke Buddy Programme focuses on supporting both local and international students in working together as a unit. It also exposes students to global citizenship spaces within their home environments. The programme aims to conjoin local and international students through meaningful longstanding friendships and is designed for them to learn and have more knowledge on intercultural competencies at UNIZULU.
The event was hosted at the Old VC’s House and was attended by the local buddies, including those buddies from the Richards Bay Campus. The local buddies were chosen among the group of students who applied when a call was made in October 2023. The induction unpacked the ground rules for the programme, looked at how boundaries can be set between buddies, the kind of support that can be provided by a local buddy and the expectations.
In attendance was Zenzele Mdletshe, Manager in the International Office; Khwezi Shamase, Liaison Officer and Coordinator of the Sisonke Buddy Programme in the International Office; Professor Ikwechuku Ezeuduji, Internationalisation Coordinator for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Professor Tholaine Matadi, Internationalisation Coordinator for the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law (FCAL); Dr Zipho Ngcobo, Internationalisation Coordinator for the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering; Dr T Ngidi, Internationalisation Coordinator for the Faculty of Education; Dr Yolanda Nkomo from FCAL and buddy students.
